Day 29 - The Mighty Wind

Panhandle to Canyon, Texas
54 miles (1663)

30 mph winds today, coming out of the north. I could ride 22 mph easy going south, but only about 7 going west. Thankfully I didn't have to travel north at all today. Frigid.
I'm staying at my second warm showers host. They are a couple, Deb and Duane, whose son did a Maine to Minnesota bike trip a few years back and have been great and very generous. They threw a dinner party, and I had more pizza than I could eat.

Day 28 - Wheeler to Panhandle, TX
86 miles (1609)

Texas has the most oil in the continental U.S. It also has the most wind.

Monday, Oct 20th
Day 27 - Cordell, OK to Wheeler, Texas
77 miles (1523)

Sunday, Oct. 19th
Day 26 - New Castle to Cordell, OK

Day 25 - Lake Dirtybird to New Castle - Fiddle Day
42 miles (1360)

Took it easy today, stopped in Norman, which is a college town south of Oklahoma City. It was game day, so the traffic around the college was tail-gateous. Go Sooners! Got some good breakfast, stopped in a book store, bike shop yadda yadda. I found two awesome new beers at this wine shop, Sierra nevada's 12th release Wet hop harvest ale, like drinking a fresh hop cone. The second one I'll drink tomorrow night. Also, i decided to stop in at the Riverwind Casino, and ended up $15 on the quarter slots. Then I kept play until i was down to $4. Still came out on top.

Friday, October 17th
Day 24 - Wetumka to Little Axe, OK - Lake Thunderbird
69 miles (1318)

Thursday, Oct. 16th 2008
Day 23 - Stigler to Wetumka, OK
77 miles (1249)

Apparently it's late in the season for this little guy. Also, they are supposedly non-venomous. Still creeped me out quite a bit to see him wandering along the highway.

Tonight I was camped out at the town campgrounds (a lot of little towns in the midwest have campgrounds, for RVs and family shin digging). A group of people invited me to join their campfire and fed me budlight. What more could you ask for?

Wednesday, Oct. 15th
Day 22 - Charleston, AR to Stigler, Oklahoma
71 miles (1172)

Oklahoma is... meh.

No, i'm just kidding around, the people here are the some of the friendliest I've encountered. The roads suck though.

my real question is if you discovered excellence while in Oklahoma?

James, I'm enjoying the blog immensely, can't wait to follow your journey via the internet. I'm jealous, wish I was riding with you. Can't wait to ask you about your trip in person.
Watch out for them potholes,
Mearns

Did they throw the pizza party for James? You should start collecting city thimbles to give to your grandkinder. I do enjoy your blogg. I still don't have a job.
